If you are planning to return to work, or be away from baby for an extended period, a breast pump is a necessary expense. How do you choose which pump is best? Which style is best? Electric or manual? These questions and more in this months newsletter.
With so many breast pumps out there, how do you decide which one to buy? Since there are so many variables, it may be hard to know where to start. Single or double pump? Rent or buy? By doing a little research, you can find the perfect pump to meet your and your baby’s needs.
First, start by assessing your needs and your expectations of what you need from a breast pump. Below are a few things to consider when choosing a breast pump:
– Why do you need a breast pump?
– How often will you pump?
– Is the pump comfortable?
– Is the pump easy to use and clean?
– How much does the pump cost?
If you are going to stay home with your baby and will only be pumping occasionally, a manual pump will get the job done. If you are going back to work and have to pump 2 to 3 times a day or several times a week, a double electric pump would be your best choice.
Manual pump advantages:
- One hand free for other tasks
- No power needed
- Few parts to assemble and clean
- Hand and wrist fatigue
- Longer pumping times
- Low milk collection
Double electric pump advantages:
- Fast flow of milk from both breasts when the milk lets down
- Short pumping times
- High milk collection in less time
- Large, bulky item to carry around
- Most need electricity to run
- Multiple parts to assemble and clean
